Therapy Assistance Online

I am pleased to be able to offer online coaching through Therapy Assistance Online (TAO) for those for whom it would be a good fit. I am one of the earliest users of TAO and have successfully utilized TAO with clients in both university settings and in private practice.

is tao a good fit for me?

TAO may be particularly useful to you if:

  • it is difficult for you to attend in-person counseling sessions

  • you are motivated to learn concrete skills to improve your quality of life

  • you are seeking didactic information about the issue in which you are interested

  • you'd like 24/7 access to a variety of exercises and resources to improve your well-being

Please note that you do not need to be located in the Richmond area to participate in TAO.

You may also take this anonymous self-assessment to obtain customized recommendations.

how is tao different from counseling?

Typical individual counseling sessions occur in person and last from 45-50 minutes; sessions may focus on gaining insight and improving emotional awareness. This wisdom is valuable, but can be time-consuming.

TAO involves the completion of online modules made up of videos, slideshows, and various exercises on your own time, followed by a 10-15 minute video conference with Katie. These videoconferences differ from individual counseling in that they typically focus more on the application of new skills, answering questions about the material, and ensuring that TAO remains a good fit for you. Done in this manner, TAO is more about meeting with a coach than with a therapist.

what can I learn about?

Currently, TAO offers modules on the following:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression

  • Interpersonal Relationships

  • Substance Abuse

  • Chronic Pain Management
